Tobacco Prevention Program
The Tobacco Prevention program works to reduce and prevent tobacco use in Perry County. The Perry County Health Department has partnered with six other counties including Fairfield, Hocking, Licking, Pickaway, Ross and Vinton on this project. This program works with local schools and businesses to promote tobacco-free environments, promotes ways to help people stop their tobacco use and offers prevention programs
.
A youth based educational program, LifeSkills, is offered in the Southern Local and Crooksville Exempted School Districts to sixth grade students. The LifeSkills curriculum covers topics like self-image, decision making, smoking, violence, coping with anxiety and anger, communication and social skills. LifeSkills uses a variety of teaching methods to help decrease the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. These students also participate in a media campaign to spread the word about making positive decisions in their lives.
The tobacco program also works with area youth and Perry Wellness Coalition members to look at tobacco advertising and where tobacco products are placed in area businesses. This information is used to encourage businesses to keep tobacco products out of reach for underage kids and decrease the amount of advertising that is done for tobacco.
If you currently use tobacco and are ready to stop, contact the Ohio Tobacco Quit Line at 1-800-QUIT-NOW. The Quit Line will provide you with free assistance to help you stop. Start quitting today!
